My Approach
My approach to training horses on the barrel pattern, is to start slowly and let the horse tell me when it is time to add pressure. All horses are different in how much pressure they can handle. With my program I add a little pressure and then take it away. If a horse is trotting the pattern consistently, I will then add a little pressure and lope through. Then on the next pass, I will take the pressure away and break down to a trot, unless I feel the horse can handle the pressure. I try and listen to the horse and let them tell me what they are ready for. I train my horses to run on their own, while allowing me to help them along the way. Each horse sees the pattern a limited number of times per week. I want them to like their job and want to work. I always finish my training sessions on the pattern at a walk; this let's the horse leave the pattern in a good state of mind. My Philosophy
In my training program I strive to set my horses up for success ! This starts with getting the horse truly broke, this means teaching them all of the fundamentals. After the horse is broke and loping correct circles I will then make the transition to the barrels. Each individual horse learns in different ways and at different speeds, this is where the training comes in. My job as a trainer is to find the most efficient and productive way in which to teach a horse to run barrels. Horses have their own style of turning; no two horses are the same. I have to find their style and make adjustments in order to enable them to perform at the best of their ability. My main focus is to ride with consistency, which builds a consistent horse for a lifetime.
